Only Ninjas are allowed outside

Guys, it’s NYEPI day for me today — a religious holiday in Bali reserved for self-reflection.

Anything that interferes is not allowed:

• No lights
• No sound
• No internet
• Nobody is allowed outside

The only people allowed outside are the “Pecalang” — like a local security/gang. We call them “Ninjas” because they roam the empty streets in darkness seeking out any light or sound they can extinguish.

I just had two ninjas knock on my door because my pool lights were on. They were pretty chill but definitely wouldn’t leave until I had killed all the lights.

The night before is when the locals construct hundreds of these massive “Ogoh-Ogohs” (demon sculptures) and each one is unique and different — they are really interesting. I posted some to my IG if you want to check them out:

Anyway, obviously they forgot to turn off my wifi lol.
